Britain's Jeff Beck, the "chief guitarist" of rock, blues and even jazz, who made his legend with Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton in the band "The Yardbirds" in the 1960s, died at the age of 78 on Tuesday of meningitis.

"On behalf of his family, we deeply mourn Jeff Beck who passed away peacefully yesterday (Tuesday) after suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis," said a statement posted on the musician's website on Wednesday evening.

Beck has won eight Grammy Awards in recognition of his skill, multiple influences and inventiveness on the electric guitar during a career spanning nearly six decades.

And all his peers, from Mick Jagger to Jimmy Page, most of whom are British of the same generation born in the forties of the last century, stopped at the "genius" of the late musician.

Jagger, frontman of the Rolling Stones, in a video on Twitter paid tribute to Jeff Beck, calling him "an amazing guy and one of the greatest guitarists in the world."

Jeff Beck then embarked on a long solo career, during which he achieved success in the mid-1970s with the album Blow By Blow.

In the 1980s and 1990s, he played guitar in concerts by Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Roger Waters, and Jon Bon Jovi.

During the 2009 Montreal Jazz Festival, he admitted that "it was very difficult to pinpoint where my voice came from."

Beck was also known for the changes he made to the sound of the guitar while playing, in a style that was experimenting in the same period with Pete Townshend's "The Who" band.

Last July, Beck released an album and played a concert with his friend, American actor and musician Johnny Depp.

Jeff Beck was not a fan of acoustic guitars, and preferred electric ones made by Fender and Gibson brands.
